Scholarships and Financial Aid

Many students are interested in scholarship opportunities to assist with the financial cost of postsecondary education such as college or trade diplomas. Scholarships are usually given to students who excel academically and in leadership roles. We offer three locations where scholarship opportunities can be found:

-Scholarship Opportunities and Resources listed below. Students complete and submit the online application directly to the organization sponsoring the funding.

-Senior Success Center Scholarships are listed below. The Senior Success Center is located at Martinsville High School.

-The Community Foundation of Morgan County (CFMC) has scholarship opportunities for high school students. Please visit their website at  https://cfmconline.org/

Senior Success Center Scholarships

Scholarships below are listed by deadlines. The applications can be found at and unless otherwise stated are to be returned to the Senior Success Center before the due date. The Senior Success Center is located at Martinsville High School.

John D. Rudd Memorial Scholarship — South Central Indiana REMC ($1,000)

For high school seniors in Brown, Clay, Johnson, Monroe, Morgan, Owen, and Putnam counties who live in an SCI REMC household and contribute to Operation RoundUp.

Deadline: February 28, noon, at South Central Indiana REMC in Martinsville

Ace Hardware, Martinsville ($1,000)

Any senior may apply who is planning to attend a vocational, technical or four-year college. Must have at least a “C” average to apply. The application requires a statement on college and career goals.

Stanley H. Byram Foundation Scholarship

Any senior or past graduate of MHS who plans to continue post-secondary education may apply. Must show financial need and have at least a “C” average.  Proceeds will be paid directly to the institution for purposes of tuition, fees, room, and board.

Co-Alliance Solutions Scholarship (twenty @ $1,000)

For area students who intend to study agriculture post-graduation, and whose parents or grandparents are members of one of the Co-Alliance member co-ops.

Clore Insurance Above All in Service Scholarship ($500)

For a Martinsville High School senior who demonstrates a serious commitment to both academic achievement and service to others.

Kappa Kappa Sigma ($1,000)

Epsilon Chapter of Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority offers a continuing annual scholarship of $1,000 to a female in the upper one-third of the present graduating class of Martinsville High School who has been accepted to an Indiana accredited institution of higher learning.

LADIES OF THE RED BARN   ($1,000)

MHS senior enrolled in a post-secondary program with a preference towards the social services but not mandatory.  The application requires a 500-word statement describing family, financial need, community services, school activities and future plans.

MARTINSVILLE NOON LIONS CLUB – JOSEPH ARNDT EDUCATIONAL AWARD ($500)

Any graduating high school senior planning to attend a vocational, trade, technical, two or four-year college may apply. Must have at least a 2.8 GPA to apply. This award is based on financial need, with special consideration given to those students who have shown a willingness to be of service in the school and/or community.

MORGAN COUNTY BEEF CATTLE ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP (four @ $1,000)

Open to Morgan County high school graduates who will enroll or are enrolled in a two or four-year degree program. Required short essay pertains to the beef industry.

TRI KAPPA – MARIE WELCH SCHOLARSHIP ($1,000)

This award is given annually either to a student in the present graduating class or to a student presently enrolled in college who was previously awarded this scholarship.

Tri Kappa – Pitkin Scholarship ($400)

The Alpha Psi Chapter of Tri Kappa will present a scholarship in the amount of $400 to a senior in the upper one-half of the graduating class who has been accepted to enroll in nursing, pre-medical, or other medical/health occupation course of study. Children of Tri Kappa members are not eligible to apply.

American Legion Scholarships:

Four different scholarships below, all administered through the local post of the American Legion.

1. American Legion Post 230 (two @ $500)

Not necessary, but preference is given to students who have a relative that is a veteran and to those who have relatives currently members of American Legion Post 230, as well as to those who have a family member that is currently active duty service in the U.S. military.

2. American Legion Auxillary Unit 230 (two @ $500)

For graduating females. Also, while not required, preference is given to students who have a relative that is a veteran and to those who have relatives currently members of American Legion Post 230, as well as to those who have a family member that is currently active duty service in the U.S. military.

3. Sons of the American Legion Squadron 230 ($500)

For graduating males. Also, while not required, strong preference is given to those students who are members of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron, sons of members, or grandsons of members. Additionally, preference is given to students who have a relative that is a veteran and to those who have relatives currently members of American Legion Post 230, as well as to those who have a family member that is currently active duty service in the U.S. military.

American Legion Riders Chapter 230 Scholarship ($500)

Not necessary, but preference is given to students who have a relative that is a veteran and to those who have relatives currently members of American Legion Post 230, as well as to those who have a family member that is currently active duty service in the U.S. military.

JUDY BERTELSEN SCHOLARSHIP BY PSI IOTA XI  ($250 each year for four years)

This scholarship,  given by Psi Iota Xi to honor the memory of longtime Martinsville educator Judy Bertelsen, is open to any senior interested in the following fields of study: education, communication, special education, speech and hearing, art, literature or music.  Applicants must have a GPA of 2.8 or higher.

L. BURPO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (amount TBA)

The S. L. Burpo Memorial Scholarship is presented annually to any MHS graduating senior who excelled as a varsity athlete. Must have at least a 2.5 GPA and plan to attend a 4-year post-secondary school.

James R. Schwab ($1,200)

MHS students who have two to three years of vocational classes and plan to continue studies in that field may apply for this renewable scholarship.  Vocational areas include classes in business, agriculture, graphic arts, auto mechanics, machine shop, building trades, home economics, drafting, and horticulture.  Must show financial need and have a “C” average.

Marine Corps League Morgan County Detachment 1367 Scholarship (three @ $750)

For graduating seniors from Morgan County who are children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, or step-children of either Active duty, reserve, retired, honorably discharged veterans, or servicemen or women who lost their lives in the line of duty in the United States Armed Forces.

For any graduating high school senior from MHS, Tabernacle, or was homeschooled. Financial need carries weight.

Ernest  & Mildred Baughman Nursing Scholarship  ($1,000)

The applicant for this $1,000 scholarship awarded through the generosity of the IU Health Morgan Foundation must meet these qualifications:  (a) Life-long resident of Morgan County, (b) accepted to a four-year institution to major in Nursing, (c) class rank of top 50%

For a student with at least a 2.8 GPA who plans to attend a vocational or trade school after graduation.

IU Health Morgan Foundation Scholarship ($2500)

A $2,500  scholarship proudly awarded by the IU Health Morgan Foundation to a 2018 graduate of Martinsville High School who will be attending a post-secondary school in preparation for a career in a healthcare occupation.

Jim Bates Memorial Scholarship (amount to be determined; was $1,000 in 2017)

The Jim Bates Memorial Scholarship has been awarded since 2001 – the award recognizes a male or female student athlete with strong grades, strong citizenship qualities, and excellent sportsmanship. Candidates for this scholarship must have been accepted to an accredited 4-year college or university, have at least a 3.0 GPA, and have exhibited qualities of high moral character and good citizenship, along with having demonstrated excellence athletically, with preference given to student-athletes who have competed in two or more sports.

Ernestine Carrell Memorial Scholarship (amount to be determined; award was $1,000 in 2017)

The Ernestine Carrell Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding business student with a GPA of at least 2.8 who will be attending a business, vocational, or trade school. The recipient will exhibit the high moral character, good citizenship, initiative, responsibility, compassion, and dedication to service exemplified by Mrs. Carrell, a secretary at Martinsville High School for twenty-five years.

WHEN G. HOCHSTETLER SCHOLARSHIP 

(amount to be determined; award was $400 in 2017) 

Tuition assistance for the senior or early graduate with career plans related to industrial arts.  Financial need is a consideration.

REV. JOSEPH D. MACDONALD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP   (amount to be determined; 2017 award was $250)

The Reverend J.D. MacDonald Award is given annually to a senior student member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Martinsville High School in memory of Reverend J.D. MacDonald; Reverend MacDonald was the longtime minister of the First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville. The award represents values shared by Reverend MacDonald, including active membership in their church, high moral character, leadership ability, exhibit service to fellow students, and academic achievement.   MUST BE A CURRENT MEMBER OF FCA.  Must have strong academics and excelled athletically. The student must be accepted to a 4 year accredited postsecondary institution, exhibit qualities of high moral character and good citizenship,  and have at least a 3.0 GPA.

William V. Pitkin Memorial Scholarship  (amount to be determined; 2017 award was $500)

The William V. Pitkin Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a senior in the upper third of the class who has been admitted to a four-year college or university to study agriculture or business.  Consideration is given to financial need.

Applicants must be in the upper 50% of the graduating class, involved in at least one extracurricular activity, and accepted into a post-secondary course of study at a trade, technical, business school, college, or university.

John R. Wooden Scholastic Award    ($1000)

Awarded to an  MHS senior that has excelled scholastically and also also displayed the high character and Christian attitudes exhibited by John R. Wooden.  Essay required based upon Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success.

For the college application or scholarship essay judged best in the class. One entry per student.

Duane & Helen Tackett O’Neal Scholarship Foundation ($10,000)

For a graduating MHS senior, this renewable (i.e. available every year you are in college, up to four years) scholarship may be used for education-related expenses at any two or four-year college or university in the United States for a full-time course of study. The award is based on financial need, academic performance, and a completed essay.

Home Bank Scholarship (three @ $1,000)

For active account holders at Home Bank who will be attending full time undergraduate studies at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, vocational or tech school in Indiana for the 2018-19 academic year. In addition to the $1,000 scholarship, Home Bank will donate $500 in the name of each winner to an approved non-profit of his/her choice.

Charles L. Smith Fine Arts Academy PTO Student Scholarship   (TBD, up to $500)

The Charles L. Smith Fine Arts Academy PTO is pleased to offer a scholarship to a graduating high school senior who attended Charles L. Smith Elementary for at least two years. The scholarship for up to $500 is to be used at an accredited college or university, community college, or vocational, trade or technical school.

GLENN M. CURTIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (amount to be determined; was $850 in 2017)

The Glenn M. Curtis Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a senior in the upper third of the class who has shown initiative, ambition, good citizenship, and high moral character.  Financial need is given strong consideration.

Meredith Knieper Scholarship  ($2,000)

This scholarship honors the memory of Meredith Knieper who, before her untimely passing, demonstrated a sense of personal excellence, characterized by a sense of purpose, focus, and determination.  The Meredith Knieper Scholarship Foundation provides for the awarding of annual scholarships to one senior from each of the following Morgan County High Schools: Monrovia, Martinsville, Mooresville, and Eminence. The individual recipients of this year’s scholarship for the graduating class of 2018 will receive a non-renewable (one-time) award of $2,000.
